God's gift: A Privilege and a Responsibility

In this Sunday Mass Homily at Saint Michael Kalibo, +Bp. Romie-Jun Peñalosa reminded us that God’s gift: A Privilege and a Responsibility. Everything we have in life comes from God and has been entrusted to us. Our bodies, possessions, talents, families, friends, and many other blessings are gifts from Him. Therefore, we should remain grateful for everything God has placed in our lives. At the same time, we must remain humble and recognize that life is both a privilege and a responsibility. If we focus only on the privileges we receive, we may become prideful. Instead, we must faithfully take responsibility for the gifts and blessings God has entrusted to us. Based on today’s Gospel, we can reflect on three things that help us remain humble in our privileges: a fence, a watchtower, and a winepress. First, the fence represents our prayers. We must surround ourselves with prayer every day, allowing God to protect and guide us. Second, we must be like a watchtower—vigilant and watchful, guarding our hearts and remaining faithful to God. Every day, we must examine ourselves and be aware of the things that can draw us away from Him. Third, we must have a winepress, which represents the daily “grinding” of our Christian life. Following Christ is not always comfortable. Nevertheless, we must remain faithful and continue serving Him even when life becomes difficult. As disciples of Jesus, let us walk with humility every day. Let us never forget that every blessing God gives us comes with a purpose. God’s gift: A Privilege and a Responsibility calls us not only to receive His blessings with gratitude but also to faithfully care for and use them for His glory and the good of others.
